Solar Power in India, Explained

Practical guides from our veteran-led engineering team, subsidies, system choices, savings and more, so you can go solar with confidence.

Guide 01

PM Surya Ghar Subsidy: A Complete Guide for Homeowners

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is the Government of India's flagship rooftop-solar scheme, designed to help households generate their own clean power and dramatically cut electricity bills. Under the scheme, residential rooftop systems receive a direct central financial assistance (subsidy) credited after installation and inspection.

The subsidy is slab-based: roughly ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW, plus ₹18,000 per kW for the 3rd kW, capped at about ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW and above. A typical 3 kW home system generates enough to cover most middle-class households' daytime consumption. Ingenieria handles the entire process, system design, registration on the national portal, installation by an empanelled vendor, net-metering and subsidy documentation, so you simply enjoy the savings. Try our Solar Savings Calculator to estimate your subsidy and payback instantly.

Rooftop vs Ground-Mount Solar: Which Is Right for You?

Rooftop solar uses your existing roof, ideal for homes, factories, institutions and commercial buildings that want to offset on-site consumption with no extra land. It is fast to deploy, qualifies for net-metering and (for homes) the PM Surya Ghar subsidy, and protects the roof from heat. The trade-off is that capacity is limited by available, shadow-free roof area and structural strength.

Ground-mount solar is built on open land and suits larger capacities, from a few hundred kilowatts to hundreds of megawatts. It allows optimal tilt and orientation for maximum generation, easier cleaning and maintenance, and is the format of choice for utility-scale parks and estates. It requires land (roughly 4–5 acres per MW) and robust foundations. Many of our clients combine both, a rooftop array plus a ground-mount plant, to maximise their renewable share. Our engineers recommend the right mix after a free site survey.

Solar for Indian Industries: Cut Costs and Carbon

For factories, smelters, tea estates and manufacturing units, electricity is one of the biggest operating costs. A captive industrial solar plant can offset a large share of that load, delivering immediate savings and a hedge against rising commercial tariffs. Businesses also benefit from accelerated depreciation, improving the after-tax return and shortening payback to as little as 3–4 years.

Beyond economics, solar strengthens your ESG and sustainability credentials, increasingly important for exporters, large buyers and green financing. Ingenieria has delivered industrial solar for names like Super Smelters (1980 kWp), DCM Hisar (10 MW) and Tata Motors, handling everything from rooftop and ground-mount to piling, civil works and O&M. Net-Metering in India, Explained

Net-metering lets a grid-connected solar system export surplus electricity back to the grid. A bi-directional meter records both the units you draw and the units you export; your bill is based on the net, so the power your panels generate during the day directly offsets your consumption, and any extra earns credits you can use later.

Policies and caps vary by state DISCOM, which is why expert handling matters. Ingenieria manages the complete net-metering workflow, feasibility, application, liaison with the distribution company, meter installation and approvals, ensuring your rooftop solar system is sanctioned and earning credits as quickly as possible.

Why O&M Is the Secret to Long-Term Solar ROI

A solar plant is a 25-year asset, and its returns depend on keeping it at peak performance for all 25 years. Dust, soiling, shading, a failing inverter or a loose connection can quietly erode generation by 10–20%. Professional Operations & Maintenance (O&M) protects your investment with preventive servicing, module cleaning, thermography, inverter upkeep and live performance monitoring.

Ingenieria offers O&M and annual maintenance contracts for both our own installations and third-party plants, plus statutory compliance support so your plant stays audit-ready. The result: maximum lifetime generation, fewer surprises and a stronger return on every rupee invested. Learn more about our O&M & Support service.
